This work is not just of collection of illustrations, although there are many.  It goes into depth about the history and culture of tattoing through the ages from all cultures.  It is very well witten and a pleasure to read.  The author carefully notes where all his information is derived from.

If you have any interest whatsoever in the art of tattoing this book is a must read.  The history is facinating.
